Eye tests and appointments

What happens during an eye test?

An eye test, also called a sight test or eye examination, checks your vision and the health of your eyes. Your optometrist will ask about your eyesight and general eye health, then choose checks that are appropriate for you. They will explain any findings and whether you need a prescription or follow-up.

How often should I have an eye test?

The NHS generally recommends an eye test every two years, or more often if your optometrist advises it. Your recommended interval can depend on your eye health, age and prescription. If you notice a sudden change in your vision, contact an eye-care professional for advice.

Read NHS guidance on visiting an optician.

What should I bring to my eye test?

Bring your current glasses and, if you wear them, your contact lenses or lens details. It can also help to bring your previous prescription, a list of medicines and details of any relevant eye-health history.

How do I book an eye test in Shepherds Bush?

You can book an eye test online or call Specialeyes Eyecare on 020 8743 7552. Contact us if you need help choosing an appointment type.

How much does a private eye test cost?

Private eye test fees can change. Please call us on 020 8743 7552 for the current price before booking. If you think you may qualify for an NHS sight test, see the eligibility information below.

NHS eye tests and OCT scans

Who can get a free NHS eye test?

Some people are entitled to a free NHS sight test, including children under 16, people aged 60 or over, people diagnosed with diabetes or glaucoma, and people who meet certain benefit or NHS certificate criteria. Universal Credit does not automatically qualify everyone; eligibility depends on the relevant criteria.

Check the latest details on the NHS page about free eye tests and optical vouchers. If you are unsure, call us before your appointment.

Do you offer NHS eye tests in Shepherds Bush?

Specialeyes Eyecare offers NHS and private sight-test appointments. NHS-funded tests are available to people who meet the eligibility rules. Please contact us to check appointment availability and what you should bring.

What is an OCT scan, and is it included with an eye test?

OCT (optical coherence tomography) is a non-invasive scan that creates detailed images of structures at the back of the eye. Our website advertises a free OCT retinal scan with every eye test; please contact us when booking to confirm the current appointment details.

Glasses and prescriptions

Can I get same-day glasses?

Same-day glasses may be possible for some prescriptions and lens choices. Timing depends on the prescription, frame and lens availability, so please call us before visiting and we can check what is possible.

Can I use my glasses prescription to buy new frames or lenses?

You can discuss your current prescription and frame or lens options with our team. Suitability depends on your prescription and the glasses you choose. Bring your latest prescription or ask us to explain the options after your sight test.

Contact lenses

Do I need a separate contact lens check?

Contact lenses need their own fitting and aftercare checks, as a glasses prescription alone does not confirm that a lens fits your eyes safely. Our team can advise which appointment is right for you, including options for daily, monthly or multifocal lenses where suitable.

Can I wear contact lenses if I have astigmatism?

Many people with astigmatism can be assessed for contact lenses designed for their prescription. The right lens depends on your eyes and needs, so book a contact lens assessment to discuss suitable options.

Ask us about contact lenses.

DVLA eye tests and driving

Do you provide DVLA eye tests?

We offer appointments for drivers who need their vision checked. Tell us when booking that you need a DVLA-related eye test so we can confirm the appointment type and what to bring. For the current legal eyesight standards, check the official GOV.UK driving eyesight rules.

Questions about glaucoma, conjunctivitis, pink eye, high eye pressure or another eye condition are best answered in a dedicated, clinically reviewed guide or during an eye-care appointment. An FAQ page cannot diagnose an eye condition.

Repairs, children’s glasses and urgent replacements

We offer repairs and reglazing, children’s and infant eyewear and myopia-management services. For lost or broken glasses, contact us about an urgent replacement.
